Within the book there is a signed photograph of Naomi inscribed "Love from Mickie". The different spelling of Micky/Mickie is as Naomi wrote it. My great-grandfather was John Lawson, an actor manager in the music hall who was famous in his day for a play called "Humanity: only a Jew". Naomi lists my great-grandmother under her married name, Mrs John Lawson, in the list of people she thanks at the beginning of her autobiography of Marie Lloyd. The sound archive section of the Imperial War Museum holds a recording of "Humanity" http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/80021170 and they kindly made a copy for me. When I originally started work on the play I met with Richard McCann on several occasions. He was anxious that his story was not sensationalised (there's been too much of that) and was handled sensitively. I believe our cast, director and me as the writer succeeded at this. I had a very positive and congratulatory e-mail from Richard this morning. You are right, the play does touch upon a lot of issues - but in many underclass family backgrounds there is a lot to contend with - and not only underclass backgrounds. It seems though that the play gave you and I hope others an insight into this tragic story and how it is possible sometimes to triumph over adversity - but the pain of the past never leaves us. I was not saying that the theorems explicitly described the two systems on offer, but more that democracy is imperfect however it is done and the statistical evidence helps to show this.

The American Dream view of democracy being perfect hides the fact there are imperfections and the need for alternative voting systems also shows that we can't easily cover off all the basis.

Whilst there are plenty of other systems, in my mind the choice given to the British public is a deliberate ploy to put off electoral reform as "something we've tried" by offering the least attractive offering to the public.

We're not offered AV+, STV etc. so we can't make that choice. Equally, offered four or five systems - how would we decide and would AV provide a different result to FPTP? The alternative vote, while oddly popular, is considered by many to be the second-worst.

But there are many other possible voting system reforms: other rank-ordering methods like the Borda count and Condorcet's method, or ordinal methods (which, incidentally, Arrow's impossibility theorem don't apply to) such as approval voting and score voting. And that's saying nothing of the various methods of proportional representation.

FPTP works poorly, AV is perhaps marginally less-poor, but that doesn't mean that all possible reforms are worthless. The question is, is a "no" vote going to send the message "let's look at other possible reforms," or "let's never speak of this again"?Dale Sheldon-Hesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07974707193305445403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8893647447080024539.post-82687746749825750902011-04-17T05:15:44.655-07:002011-04-17T05:15:44.655-07:00[Comments via John Baron]
Some interesting points...[Comments via John Baron]

Some interesting points here, Thomas.

How important are local newspapers to their community? My answer is VERY - as long as they're funded and run correctly. And for me, personally, therein lies a problem.

Take, for example, my old paper the Wharfedale Observer. I spent five happy years between 99-04 at that paper. Aireborough legend Barrie Pennett was a major inspiration for me. He covered his patch for some 50-odd years, he knew everyone in that community - he couldn't walk through Yeadon or Guiseley without being stopped at least half a dozen times. Everyone knew him.

The Wharfedale was a broadsheet and was highly respected. I remember sitting through hours and hours of Pool Parish Council meetings - if I learnt nothing else, there are problem with slippy leaves on the footpaths of that village (!).

My point is that it was a paper that was close to its community - it had its roots in everyday life, and had close ties with local groups.

I'm not knocking the folks who are there now as I know many of them and there are some good people, but what's happened to the Wharfedale is indicative of the decline of local printed media.

It no longer has an office in Otley. Reporters work from home or in Ilkley, but there's no physical building to focus on - it feels as if the paper (rightly or wrongly) has pulled out of the community.

Secondly, it doesn't exist as its own entity any more - it's merged with its sister paper the Ilkley Gazette and become a tabloid. Instead of being focussed on Otley, Bramhope Aireborough and Horsforth, its empire now extends all the way out to Addingham. Horsforth and Addingham have nothing in common with each other, believe me.

I don't think parish councils like Pool get regular attention as they did before, certainly not to the extent of a reporter sitting through hours and hours of meetings as I did.

There are fewer staff. It's subbed centrally in Bradford instead of in the towns themselves. It doesn't have its own dedicated editor - Keighley News ed Malcolm Hoddy (a very accomplished local journo and experienced ed) has taken it under his wing. It doesn't have a deputy ed any more. There are fewer journalists working for both titles. It doesn't have its own fulltime photographer any more. The title doesn't, I believe, have its own dedicated sport editor since the wonderful stalwart Rachel O'Connor left. Barrie's sadly no longer with us. Lost are his knowledge and contacts.

Now, I've seen the paper since its recent relaunch, and it doesn't do a bad job at all if you don't now the area and there are some issues that affected both patches (such as traffic congestion on the A65) that are now comfortably housed in the same title, but for me it's lost its localness, its community feel. It's focus. And that's sad.

When I first started in journalism some 17 years ago on the Leeds Weekly News, an old journalist called Dennis Casson told me that a good local paper could galvanise the local community, take up the fight for - and that its patch journalist was genuinely a part of that community.

How many papers can really claim that now? Not many. As a result, papers are less relevant to people. Journalists generally don't embrace the digital side of the operation.

All these are real issues as far as I'm concerned.Thomas Atchesonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05758835724042024499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8893647447080024539.post-7161000014983399122010-12-22T06:23:43.565-08:002010-12-22T06:23:43.565-08:00Are you volenteering to organise the 2013 pudding ...Are you volenteering to organise the 2013 pudding then?Thomas Atchesonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05758835724042024499noreply@blogger.com
